I’m excited to introduce the latest addition to my series, AmiRadio. For those who have been following along, you know how much I love crafting these mixtapes. Each one is a unique journey through the rich soundscape of my vinyl records, recorded and mixed live, captured on a low-speed reel-to-reel tape recorder.
This new mixtape continues the tradition of eclectic track selections. I’ve woven together a tapestry of Jazz, late 1990s Indie Rock, early electronic pop, Argentinian folk, Progressive, Singer-Songwriters and more. My excitement and fascination with tangible music can’t stop. There’s nothing quite like the tactile experience of working with vinyl—the random subtle imperfections like speed fluctuations, infrequent crackle or clicks, the thrill of live mixing. It’s a process that keeps me deeply connected to the music, and I hope that comes through in the final stage – your listening experience.

As always, my mixtapes are coming inconsistently – but here’s a new one, full with different sounds, one I collected while traveling to wonderful Colombia a few months ago, another, I’ve been introduced to by a coworker, and so forth – 10 different music pieces from different times and places, all played with vinyl records and recorded on slow-speed reel to reel tape for a perfect LO-FI experience – here we go:

Yep! When the setup is here, the music is just waiting for me to spin on the ‘tables, so I did! With the eclectic appeal, I pulled up diverse titles. You have it all here – Brass Rock to Oum Kalthoum, French Chanson to Israeli folklore, Stravinsky to Dark 1980s, and so forth. This genre-hopping flows really sweet when playing from start to end:
In my first years as a music digger, I came across this concept called Progressive Rock. I didn’t understand at all what was behind this term. As a child I always loved when they played Moonlight Shadow on the radio, I didn’t know anything about the performer. I believe that at some point I came across a collection of hits from the ’80s where the song came up and that’s how I went looking for more of Mike Oldfield’s stuff that was classified under Progressive Rock in the Third Ear store which was then located on Nordau street in Haifa’s Hadar neighborhood.
I found that Pink Floyd neighbored in the same bin with Genesis, which until then I had known only as a pop band from the 1980s and had no idea of their activity in the 1970s.
That’s how I discovered more and more artists and was totally caught up in the charms of the genre. A few years later I had a Progressive Rock band of my own.
What caught me, at first without theoretical knowledge at all, is the relative musical freedom of those artists. I do not know if my assumption is correct, but the reason why this musical genre was labeled as Progressive Rock was due to technical reasons – these bands contained the usual core of rock groups – bass/guitars/drums – to which added layers of different musical instruments and other audible effects that were really much more complex and sometimes bolder than what could be found in Classic Rock acts, of course, the music itself is complex and the songs or the pieces are much longer than a regular Rock song.
Even under this umbrella were sub-genres and phenomena, and what I am interested to mention in this context – Progressive Rock, especially in the circles of musicians and music enthusiasts in general, gets a lot of blows and was sometimes perceived as pretentious or ostentatious – sometimes justified – some of the artists belonging to this genre tend to show off their technical abilities with their musical instruments, and sometimes you can find whole albums filled with instrumental pyrotechnics and very little musical content with a statement. I have never been captivated by the technocratic content, and I have always connected to pieces and songs with clear shape and content – one that can be sung or played in the head.
The next mixtape contains pieces, some of which no one would label as Progressive at all, I find they have a straight connection to the genre, at least with their spirit 😉
With the last 3 years, I’m working as a music director and technician in a local radio station. Because it is a station that doesn’t occupy many live shows during the day, we have a lot of extra empty hours in which in regular times the computer use to random music and jingles or pre-recorded shows. When I had free time, I started to create my own playlists to broadcast in these open hours. And with my natural way, these playlists turned out to be extremely eclectic. So I decided to upload some of them for your pleasure:
כפי שהבטחתי באחד מהפוסטים האחרונים שלי, שלמעשה היה פוסט אורח אצל ה”קונכיה“, מעכשיו אני מתחיל להעלות אל שרת תוכניות הרדיו הישראלי iCast [מסתבר שהשרת של icast נפל נכון לדצמבר 2016 ועל כן החלטתי לעלות ל-MixCloud את כל התוכניות המדוברות שערכתי לרדיו במהלך 2012 בהמשך הפוסט הזה] אלה תוכניות רדיו שערכתי במקום, בזמן שיש לי הרבה חלונות ריקים בלוח השידורים בתחנה הסטודנטיאלית שאני עובד בה מזה 3 שנים. אם בא לכם להקשיב לאקלקטיקה מסחררת ומקפצת בין מיטב סגנונות המוסיקה הקיימים על הכדור שלנו, נחתתם במקום הנכון. חשוב לציין, מפאת האילתור, לפעמים הרצפים המוסיקאליים האלה לא יצאו במיטבם לטעמי, ולכן אני בוחר להעלות לרשת את אלה שאני מוצא בהם גם עניין מוסיקאלי וגם רצף מענג:
You can’t imagine how I’m excited to upload this post. More than ten years ago I found several magnetic reel-to-reel tapes in one of my trips to the flea market of Jaffa (the old city of Tel Aviv), I bought these used reels to use them as a recording media. Most of these reels usually contained classical music (in the better case) and in a lot of worst cases they included boring easy listening music (like Ray Conniff, James Last, etc.), surely not something that justifies keeping such reel as is. In rare occasions, this kind of reels contained good music that was beneficial for me and here there is an excellent example. This particular series of reels included different recordings from a German radio station(s) that broadcast sometimes in the early 1970s. Most of the tracks were unfamiliar to me. I must remind that in this time (I think it was 1998) the Internet was still new, the options to discover new music were quite limited through online environment, and I, like a good music digger, was frequently visiting the good music stores to find new Anonyme musical piece.
Each reel among these reels (I think they were four I found together) contained 12 (!) recording hours. Surely not in high-quality recording (with domestic reel to reel tape recorders you could record on the tapes with different options: speeds, and channel selection, mono or stereo – it’s like different digital bandwidth options). I couldn’t take such an advantage as granted before the unlimited digital storage that we have today. Remember that in those days the most popular format for playing music was still the cassette tape that usually contained only 90 mins of recording, and here with these old reel-to-reel tapes I had much more recorded hours and I could ‘fish’ the music that I wanted in that time.
During a long time, I couldn’t find details about most of these tracks. I think that later I burnt a CD with these tracks and brought to one of the experts at a music shop which was willing to help me discover these anonymous tracks. I don’t remember that there was any proceeding to this gesture. Some of the tracks I discovered accidentally. For example the fascinating track of Kraftwerk from their first album that released in 1970, and as much as I know it never released again formally, The Doors’ song that released one year after Jim Morrison’s tragic death (when Ray Manzarek, the keyboardist, is singing entertainingly) and more. Well, here there is a remarkable typical symbiosis between now and then. From some search after music files for an entirely different goal, I found this directory with the files that I converted from reels to digital. Then I recalled that there are still many tracks that I haven’t found what or who performed them. With the help of the current cellular apps ‘Shazam’ and ‘Sound Hound’ (except for one intractable track, that a great guy from one of the online musical forums for finding Anonyme music helped me to discover), I solved the old mystery.
This ‘nugget’ contains the tracks that I fished still in that era when I just found those reels. (I recorded them on a cassette tape that I used to carry with me in my walkman or in the car). Only now they are presented for you and me from an original source and not from a dull monophonic recording. I did add the original German radio host that talked between some tracks, and that’s for the authenticity of the story.
I chose the AsymmetricK name for the nugget because of the eclectic-progressive character of its music.

אתם לא יכולים לתאר לעצמכם עד כמה אני נרגש להעלות את הפוסט הזה. לפני יותר מעשר שנים מצאתי באחד משיטוטיי בשוק הפשפשים היפואי (שאז עוד היה אותנטי, נטול חנויות מעושות, בתי קפה וגלידריות), מספר סלילים מגנטיים, כאלה שבדרך כלל היו מיועדים אצלי להקלטה חדשה – רוב הסלילים המשומשים שהייתי קונה באותה תקופה היו מכילים ברובם מוסיקה קלאסית (במקרה הטוב), ובהרבה מקרים אחרים מוסיקת מעליות לא מעניינת (ריי קוניף, ג’יימס לאסט ודומיהם), בוודאי לא משהו שמצדיק שימור של סליל שלם. לעיתים רחוקות הסלילים כן היו מכילים מוסיקה בעלת ערך עבורי וכאן הדוגמא המשמעותית. סידרת הסלילים המסויימת הזו כללה הקלטות שונות מתחנת רדיו גרמנית, ששידרה אי שם בתחילת שנות ה-70. את מרבית הקטעים לא הכרתי, אני מזכיר שאז (1998 כמדומני…) האינטרנט היה עוד בחיתוליו, אפשרות החשיפה למוסיקה חדשה הייתה עדיין דיי מוגבלת בשיטה הוירטואלית, ואני כמיטב החפרנים הייתי פוקד את חנויות המוסיקה המשובחות תדיר, בחיפוש אחר פיסה מוסיקאלית עלומה. כל סליל מבין הסלילים המדוברים (אני חושב שהיו 4 בסידרה הזאת), הכיל 12 (!) שעות הקלטה, אמנם לא באיכות הקלטה גבוהה (במכשירי טייפ הסלילים הביתיים ניתן להקליט בכמה אפשרויות ע”פ מהירות ובחירת ערוץ מונו או סטריאו – למעשה זה ממש פס רוחב כמו במושגים הדיגיטליים של ימינו) הדבר לא היה מובן מאליו בעידן טרום אחסון דיגיטלי בלתי מוגבל – להזכירכם הפורמט הפופלארי עדיין באותה תקופה, היה קסטת טייפ ממוצעת שכללה 90 דקות הקלטה בלבד, כך שפתאום היו לי הרבה מאוד שעות מוקלטות, מתוכן דגתי את מה שעניין אותי במיוחד באותה תקופה. במשך שנים לא מבוטלות לא מצאתי פרטים לגביי רוב הקטעים, אני זוכר שמאוחר יותר צרבתי דיסק עם הקטעים הלא מפוענחים והבאתי לאחד המומחים בחנות תקליטים מסויימת כדי לעזור לי בפיענוח – לא זכור לי שהיה עם זה איזה המשך לפיתרון. חלק מהקטעים התגלו לי במקרה, למשל הרצועה המרתקת של Kraftwerk מאלבומם השני שיצא ב 1970, ולמיטב ידיעתי לא יצא מחדש אף פעם באופן רשמי, שיר של ה- Doors שיצא באלבום שנה אחרי מותו הטראגי של ג’ים מוריסון (כשריי מאנזארק האורגניסט אמון על הקול המשעשע בשיר) ועוד. ובכן גם כאן מסתמנת הסימביוזה הפופולרית שלי בין אז לעכשיו – מחיפוש קבצים מסויימים למטרה אחרת מצאתי את הספריה עם הקבצים שהמרתי בזמנו מהסליל למחשב עבור אותו בחור מחנות התקליטים, ואז נזכרתי בעצם שיש עוד מספר לא מבוטל של רצועות לא מפוענחות, וכך בעזרת האפליקציות הסלולאריות Shazam ו- Sound Hound (מלבד רצועה אחת סוררת, שצדיק אחד מפורום לזיהוי שירים עזר לי למצוא) פתרתי את התעלומה הותיקה. הנגיס הבא מכיל את הרצועות אותן בחרתי בקפידה עוד באותה תקופה (כשהקלטתי אותן על קסטה איתה הייתי מסתובב ומנגן לי בווקמן או ברכב), רק שעכשיו הן מוגשות עבורכם ועבורי ממקור ראשון ולא מהקלטה עמומה ומונופונית. כן הוספתי אליהם את קריינות השדר הגרמני בין כמה רצועות – להעצמת האותנטיות שבעניין. החלטתי לכנות את הנגיס AsymmetricK מפאת האופי האקלקטי-פרוגרסיבי שלו… תחי המודֶרְנָה!
